We have already redirected funding to address many water leaks and sewer problems in the city. We have also brought in additional contracting crews (three total companies) to address these problems as quickly as we can. At this time (May 2025) we have directed all the assets we can within the general fund towards this concern.
That money hasn't gone anywhere. It is still in holding waiting for the grant process to be completed, then it will be spent on the library renovation project.
The water meter replacement project was suspended because many of the meters have not been able to be located. These meters have been underground and unmarked for around 20-25 years, and as a result locating them takes time.
Payment rates for employees of the city are set by civil service, not by the City of Opelousas.
For generations our water system has been neglected and unfortunately we are the ones who are left to make the repairs or risk going without water.
This could be due to a leak on your side of the meter. Check for visible signs of water in or around home, but keep in mind not all leaks are visible. Make sure your toilets are not perpetually running. We also recommend you download the "Eye On Water" app to set alerts, monitor water usage, and assist you in detecting leaks.
Payments may be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 1-855-230-7396, also by visiting cityofopelousas.com and selecting "pay water bill." You can also setup reoccurring payments with ACH or a credit card.
There is also a kiosk located at city hall on Bellvue street where water bills may be paid.
Due dates are located at the top right corner of your bill, underneath your account number.
Service dates are located at the top of your bill.
Please make sure that City Hall has your accurate mailing address on file to ensure we can best serve you and that your water service is not at risk of being disconnected.
When paying online, please register your account with a valid email address. A receipt is sent after payment to the email provided.
